Astroglide costing you a fortune? Want to launch the space shuttle? Make your own edible love lotion! Making your own edible love lotion is very easy cost effective.  Once you learn to make edible love lotion you can make other neat products with the same ingredient.   The primary ingredient in the edible love lotion recipe (formula) is sweet vegetable glycerin.  The main equipment you need includes a basic funnel and cute bottles.  Where to buy bottles is listed out below under "suppliers." Vegetable Glycerin can be purchased for under $20 a gallon.  That is like 15 cents an ounce and Astroglide costs something like $10 for two ounces.  People re-selling their potions are easily getting $5 for two ounces.

You can get vegetable glycerin in small amounts at "Boots" in the U.K. or at larger U.S. pharmacies and in Canada at Jean Coutu Click here for How to Make Your Own Perfume by Dolen.

Basic Edible Love Lotion Recipe - Makes 8 Ounces

8 Ounces of Vegetable Glycerin

.10 ounce of Flavor Oil of choice

With a simple stir stick, you can gentle fold the flavor in.  This is so easy you do not usually need a stick blender or any elaborate mixers.  Copyright Deborah Dolen

Edible love lotion flavor ideas:  You can blend flavors to make your own signature flavor.  Cherry-Coconut, Pina Colada, Tangerine-Marshmallow, Lime-Spearmint, Lemon-Peppermint, Tahitian Vanilla, the list is endless.  You can even add a "sour" note as that is sold as a flavor.  So, with a sour note you can make sour cherry, sour lime, sour watermelon and so on.   Vegetable glycerin is naturally sweet and you do not need a sweetener.

About flavoring edible love lotion

Flavoring should be water based, but not extracts because they smell too much like alcohal.  In a pinch for flavoring you can secure flavor oils at Michaels Craft Centers in the cake section.  Your best deal for flavor power will be water based flavors with no alcohal on the internet.  Flavor is usually added at 1% of the total recipe.  This means 128 ounces of vegetable glycerin, 1.28 ounces of flavor should do it.  Flavor is not detrimental to the recipe and can be adjusted.  Always make test batches in small amounts and keep notes.  Your best mistake could arise after you forgot to take notes!

Do I need a preservative?  No.  Sweet Vegetable Glycerin has a high enough alcohal content there is not much worry about micro-organisms.  Still, keep your production as clean as possible.  The alcohal content may be high, but fortunately not enough to have an alcohal smell.

How do I get the "warming when blown on effect"

The component of most any edible love lotion that feels "warming" is a menthol factor.  Vegetable glycerin on its own does not create a warm sensation.

Notes about other uses of vegetable glycerin:

Vegetable Glycerin is awesome for dry skin.  A natural humectants it draws moisture to dry skin.  With menthol added it is great for calming most rashes caused by sensitivity to other products.  Vegetable Glycerin is also used by dancers such as ballerina's who simply add glitter or mica to stay shiny at events.

Suppliers:

I find vegetable glycerin the most affordable in gallon form at Columbus Foods.   Some pharmacies now carry vegetable glycerin in small sized bottles.  Google "Deborah Dolen Recipes" or "Mabel White Recipes" for more free recipes around the web.  http://www.wholesalesuppliesplus.com is awesome for any kind of bottles or even jars if you need jars. http://www.mabelwhite.com/SupplyCo/FlavorOils.html is one source for flavor.  Other Mabel White Collections authored by Deborah Dolen.

About Author Deborah Dolen return to home page

Deborah Dolen is the Editor in Chief for Mabel White DIY and author of over 25 DIY books, 1,000 articles and several TV "how to" Films.  Deborah Dolen is also an environmental writer and has her own content syndication.  Deborah Dolen was widowed when she was on her 30's and went on to raise three great daughters in FL up against many obstacles.  This is the time period she generated her most fascinating DIY books.

Deborah Dolen was born in a Catholic Infant Home on Niagara Falls, the U.S. side.  It was known as Our Lady of Victory.  Deborah grew up in the Adirondack mountains in Upstate New York although moved around a lot and always in transition.  Her teenage years were more stable and thoroughbred race horses were her passion. She skipped school a lot in the 70's to walk and groom the likes of Man o' War and Secretariat.  When she was not grooming horses in Saratoga she was hitting the ski slopes of Killington in Vermont, Pikes Peak, or Gore Mountain to name a few.  To this day K-2's are her favorite skis and Head are her favorite bindings.

In her 20's  Deborah Dolen built some 520 legal clinics for the poor from the ground up and ran for 17 years.  People simply needed affordable legal access and that still has not changed much.  Having grown up poor and discriminated against-even disallowed to play with certain toys...Deborah had never been a quiet type and bucked many regimes as an adult.  In the 80's she felt almost all legal fees were oppressive to the majority for no reason and feels they still are.  Her organization helped well over 100,000 people.  Many of those were able to teach other people in turn.  As with health care, Canada does not charge its citizens for most common family law issues and Deborah feels family issues, including financial ones, should not be a feeding frenzy in the states as it still certainly is. No one should profit of the demise of another person.

Fast forward a few decades and Deborah Dolen is very much into flying and canine rescue as well as DIY projects she writes about and films from her Florida home.  Although her passions have always been with horse racing she is very into auto racing, focus and performance in Daytona and Charlotte, NC.  Deborah presently writes about environmental topics beyond DIY subjects that will always fascinate her.  Her dog Ringo, adopted from Katrina, is usually by her side
